Oak Park Township Advisory Referendum

Oak Park, Illinois - The residents of the Village of Oak Park will have the opportunity to cast their vote during the 2022 General Election for or against an advisory referendum. The language of the referendum on the 2022 General Election Ballot is as follows:

Shall the people of Illinois adopt the Illinois Initiative Amendment, which would give voters the right to propose and enact amendments by means of voter petition and referendum?”

This question is on the Oak Park ballot following approval during thee 2021 annual Oak Park Township Meeting.  In order for the referendum question to be considered during the Annual Meeting a resident of Oak Park must comply with the Illinois State Statute (60 ILCS 1/30-205) which allows citizens to bring forth an advisory referendum for consideration. The process requires a citizen to create a petition supporting an advisory referendum question be placed on the Annual Meeting agenda. The citizen must gather 15 signatures of registered voters within the township and submits it to the township clerk by March 1. The clerk must place the referendum on the agenda for the Annual Meeting, which is held each year on the second Tuesday of April. The registered voters of the township who are in attendance at the Annual Meeting vote on whether the referendum should be placed on the ballot of the next election. If it passes, the clerk must submit it to the county clerk for placement on the ballot. The local township board has no role in the process.
