Oak Park Township Endorses Village Welcoming Ordinance

On Tuesday, February 28th, the Oak Park Township Board passed a resolution endorsing the village's new "Welcoming Ordinance" section to its Human Rights ordinance. The township works in close partnership with the village, providing social services to residents, funding to mental health and youth serving agencies, and information to visitors.

The resolution states the township's long-standing practice of being immigrant-friendly, welcoming diversity, and treating all residents and visitors fairly and with respect and dignity. The Township resolution commits to using the village ordinance to guide policy and procedural decisions that may arise in the delivery of services, especially with regard to:

  • Not registering individuals based on ancestry, national origin, or religion; and
  • Providing services without regard to citizenship or immigration status, unless required by statute, state or federal regulation, or court order.

Many township services and programs already have statutory or contractual limitations based on residency and assets.  For some programs, including General Assistance, clients are required to provide other identifying information such as a social security number.

The full Township Resolution is available here, and general information on the township can be found at oakparktownship.org.
