Township Day 2018

August 28, 2018

Oak Park and River Forest Townships Invite the Community to an
Open House on September 21st, 2018 as Part of Illinois Township Day

Oak Park and River Forest Townships will hold a free Open House on Friday, September 21st from 4pm-7pm at 105 S. Oak Park Avenue.  To celebrate its 115th anniversary, Oak Park Township will give away free oak tree saplings to the first 115 guests, thanks to a generous donation from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s “Restore the Canopy” program.  Similarly, River Forest Township will give away 101 saplings to commemorate its 101 years as a township.

We will also be collecting nonperishable food in one of our Senior Services vehicles to “Fill the Van!” Donations will benefit patrons of the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry.  There will be musical entertainment, refreshments, and an opportunity to meet the Township Teams to learn more about all of our programs and services.  This year, we are also honoring Girl Scout Troop 40879 from Longfellow School.  The Junior Girl Scouts designed and planted a garden at Oak Park Township’s 105 S. Oak Park Avenue location specifically to attract butterflies.

Townships across Illinois officially celebrate Township Day each year on September 21st to invite residents to learn about the many vital services Townships provide and raise awareness about Townships’ impact on their communities.

Of Illinois’ 102 counties, 85 operate under the township form of government and the 1,431 townships serve more than eight million citizens.  Oak Park was made a township by the Cook County Board in November 1902; River Forest Township began in 1917.  Both Townships focus on social services that provide or fund programs for youth, seniors, mental health, and those in financial need within their geographic boundaries.  The Townships also provide Assessor services to residents seeking information and assistance in regard to their property taxes.

During our Open House on September 21st, tours of the two Oak Park Township facilities will be available and staff members and elected officials from both Townships will be on hand from departments that include Assessor Services, Senior Services, Youth Services, Mental Health Services and General Assistance.
