Board of Review Accepting Assessment Appeals for 2017 - Tax Appeal Meeting on July 25th, 2017

Contact:  Ali ElSaffar

Oak Park property owners concerned about their property taxes have an opportunity to do something about next year’s tax bills.  According to Oak Park Township Assessor Ali ElSaffar, Oak Park property owners can now appeal their 2017 assessed values with the Cook County Board of Review.  The township is offering residents two ways to get help in filing an appeal.

The first option for residents seeking help with appeals is to attend a meeting with the Board of Review on Tuesday, July 25.  At the meeting, representatives from the office of Board of Review Commissioner Larry Rogers, Jr. will explain the appeal process and help residents file appeals.  The meeting will take place at 6:30 PM in the auditorium at Julian Middle School, located at 416 S. Ridgeland Avenue.  The meeting is co-sponsored by the offices of the Oak Park Township Assessor, State Senator Don Harmon and State Representative Camille Lilly.

The second option involves a visit to the Township Assessor’s office at 105 S. Oak Park Avenue.  During the visit, assessor’s office staff will help residents prepare evidence to substantiate their appeals.  To avoid long waits in his office, Assessor ElSaffar asks that those seeking help from the Township call (708) 383-8005 to schedule an appointment.

"When Oak Park properties were reassessed by the Cook County Assessor earlier this year, local property owners had an opportunity to contest their new assessments through the Cook County Assessor’s appeal process," ElSaffar said.  "The Board of Review provides local property owners a second chance to appeal their assessments.  Those who did not file an appeal with the Assessor’s office may appeal to the Board of Review.  In addition, those who filed appeals with the Assessor but did not like the results also have the right to appeal to the Board of Review."

Since Cook County tax bills always arrive one year late, property owners should be aware that the money-saving effects of successful 2017 appeals will not appear on tax bills until the summer of calendar year 2018.
